The Hayes Files: Happy Birthday To Me
Andrew Jackson didn’t like people saying bad things about his beloved wife, Rachel. One such unlucky slanderer was Charles Dickinson, who claimed that Rachel had not officially divorced her first husband. Jackson challenged Dickinson to a duel. On May 30, 1806 Jackson and Dickinson stood 24 feet apart at the Red River in Logan, KY. Dickinson shot first and hit Jackson in the sternum and the ribs, knocking Jackson to the ground. Jackson got up, told Dickinson to get back on his spot, and fatally wounded Dickinson with one shot. Don’t mess with Andy Jackson.
